Nikon, Capture NX, Software, Adobe Lightroom EDITING ONE OF MY ABSTRACT IMAGES
I have decided to do a little bit more videos on my editing process of my images. I think uh two reasons, one because i’ve had quite a few comments of people saying that they would like to see that and also i think, it’s going to be of more interest to people rather than me, just standing in a field point in the camera or Something there’s so many videos out there with people taking images with compositions and so on so um, with my type of photography that you could call it abstract. I prefer to call it photographic art. It might be of interest for people to see how i actually create my images from scratch. Let me know if you agree that this is more of an interest to you. First thing is: i use for uh 19. Well, probably 80 of my editing process is done on a apple uh, app called i colorama, which uh has to be done on uh an ipad it’s only available for apple. If you are interested in doing this sort of editing of your images, i highly recommend you get it it’s. Only four pound 99 allows you to do so. Many things to your images and i absolutely love it and found it very helpful, now i’m, not saying that everything i do on this app cannot be done in photoshop or lightroom. It probably can i’m not really conversant with uh, photoshopper or lightroom. I find it just so so complicated that uh, i just don’t, think i’d ever get my head around it.
So i love this eye. Color armor, so the first one i’m going to do. I went down to hive marina in southampton the other day and took some images there’s a a pier and a ferry at hive, but i did take some images of that, but um i’m not actually um editing those i’m editing these and there were two um in Particular which i liked – and i thought if i combine these two together, i might be able to get a good final image, so let’s uh, open up eye, colorama and we’ll get stuck straight into it. Okay, the first thing i uh i’m going to do is open up my base image, which i’ve done in eye colorama um. I always open it up as a tiff file. Reason being is um if you do any adjustments to the image in any other editing software before you open up an eye, color armor, and if you were to open it up as a raw file, it wouldn’t be recognizing the adjustments the changes you’d made, whereas it Does in a tiff file, so i always open it up as a tiff file, but you could open it up as a jpeg if you wanted to, but i always think it’d probably be better quality as a tiff. So we have our base image and the first thing we’re going to do is go to effects and blend and then we’re going to add our second image and then i’m going to uh go down the various blending modes to see which one um suits this particular Image and in this actual one i did actually pick um average, but i usually go through the whole lot to see which one is best uh.
I would then just uh line up the second image to the first one, where i think i want it to be, and then, in this case i’m just going to line up the water line here and once i’ve done that and i’m happy with that. I just click on the apply button at the top right and it is saved to my steps box on the left hand, side here so it’s saved to number two okay. The next thing i want to do with this image is create a reflection, so i’m going to go up to a form, uh mirror, and i think it’s, the second one down that gives us that mirror effect. Now i want to delete the top half of this image, so i’ll go to brush mask and just delete that upper half let’s reduce the brush size slightly and i’m, going to come down to the um water line and if i press on show it actually reds Out the area that i’m deleting which is a great help so i’m just going to come down roughly to the water line, which is about there probably gone over a little bit there. So click on erase just clean that up a little bit. Okay, so i’m, happy with that so i’m going to apply that adjustment, and as long as i don’t shut that actual box um, i can now make any other adjustments um to the lower half without it affecting the top half.
If i was to close this um a box it, it would um give me a fresh sort of palette if you like to work on. So, if i show you i’ve still got the top half of the image um read out. So what i want to do is make the lower part of this image a bit lighter, because a reflection should be so i’m going to go to um, adjust exposure and i’m going to dial in um 10 percent um. But if, if i extreme, you see it’s just affecting the lower part of the image so i’m going to dial in um ten percent on that and i’m happy with that. But i want to make the whole image um a little bit lighter um. But i can do that by just clicking on apply and then going to my steps box and just opening up that image that i’ve just done, and i have now basically a fresh palette to work on. If i show you the brush mask the um part, i erased it is now not erased if you like, so what i’m going to do. There is again go to exposure and i’m just going to dial in another 10, as you can see, it’s adjusting the whole image now i’m going to put it dial in 10 percent and that has basically lightened up the whole image um. But i have the lower part that bit lighter than the top half okay, the next thing we’re going to do to this image um in eye colorama.
You have a lot of special effects that you can apply um. Now a lot of people will say you know it’s cheating. If that’s not your thing, then that’s, absolutely fine, but um. You know, as i said before, i like to call this photographic art. So you know i’m i’m, perfectly happy with it and i actually uh a chap called chris real uh. Who is um a great inspiration to me. I mentioned it to him once about um. Do you not get people criticizing because um he uses this eye color armor? A lot to manipulate his images and do people not criticize you uh for that and his answer was who cares, which i thought was a great answer, but um anyway, so we’re going to go to um form and we’re, going to press on a little icon here, Which says sort – and it gives you um this effect, and there are four boxes that one that one and then um, horizontal ones, um we’re, going to go on number one um and i actually want to delete this top part of the image, because i don’t really Want this effect up there, so we’re just going to get rid of that like that and i’m i’m actually going to press on this limits, button which will limit the amount of image which is affected by the delete button. Okay and i’m, also going to um, delete the what what i’m going to do i’m going to turn the opacity down a bit.
So i can see the image more clearly and i’m actually going to delete the bottom part of the image as well. Let’S just show where i’m at and i’ll explain why, in a minute and i’m, going to take that up to the water line, basically and i’m going to this displace. Let me turn the opacity up a bit more again and this displace um lever or slider here. Um you can make adjustments to the effect it makes i’m going to leave that um on zero and i’m going to turn the opacity down to 40 percent and i’m happy. If i show you the bits that aren’t affected so i’m happy with the effect i’ve got on the top half of the image there, but what i now want to do is do the same to the bottom half, but i want to do it a bit more Extreme so i’m going to save that or apply it and i’m going to then re open the image and i’m going to now make the adjustments the same adjustments to the lower part of the image. So we’re now going to do exactly the same we’re going to pick sort only this time, i’m going to pick image number two um, i think and i’m just going to reduce the opacity to be able to see the image more clearly and i’m now going to Delete the whole top edge of that image, reduce the brush size down again and i’m, going to reduce oh i’m, going to erase that whole top edge down to the water line.
So this effect now is only affecting the lower part of the image um, and i just want to – i think, displace is about right, where it is which is on zero um, and i just want to reduce the opacity of that. Probably too, hmm i’m going to keep that at about 50. I think so, i’m happy with that so i’m going to apply and then go back into steps. So what we’re going to do? We’Re going to uh try and have a look at what sort of color palettes we can get so we’re going to go to tone and enhance, and i there’s a lot here. We’Ve got enhanced, we got pastel, we got cyan, we got tint, lomo, duo, tone, sepia, black and white um and very often i will go through every single one of them to see what suits the image. But i always start off with enhance and i’m going to run down these um particular palettes to see what i think suits the image – and i know in this actual particular one. I picked number 27 if i can find that uh five, six, seven, which is a final one – and that is the actual palette that i chose um. You can adjust the contrast, um or you can adjust the gamma on this and i’m going to reduce the camera. A little bit to about yeah, probably about 75 minus 75 – i think, which i think is quite appealing, and that is all i’m going to do to this image.
Um in eye colorama i’m now going to apply that setting and i am going to save it either as a jpeg or a png um. I i usually save it as a png and then convert it in photoshop elements to a tiff file that i can then open it up in capture nx2, which i use for my editing. I always think i don’t know whether it’s right, but i always think doing it that way you get a better quality file, so we’re going to save that as a png and we’re now going to open that up in capture nx2, okay, so we’ve opened up our Image uh in uh a capture nx2 um. Obviously you could do this in photoshop or lightroom um, and i i have actually sort of made adjustments to this image, so i’ve deconstructed it for you. The first thing i did was just straighten it up a little bit because the water line was a little bit askew. So i just sort of straightened it up. The next thing we did was just dialed in a little bit of um color booster, just to make it pop a little bit more um. I just then tweet the levels and curves. I just pulled the dark tones down a little bit, which gave me that auto retouch brush was literally just cleaning the image up as necessary, and the very final thing we did to it was crop it into a um panorama crop which i think suited this particular Image – and that was it there is your final um product love it or hate it.
You may not like it. You may not like the way it’s been created, um, but hey. You know it is what it is um so yeah. I really really hope. You’Ve enjoyed seeing me make this image and i’m planning on doing a lot more of these editing of my images. How i create them, because i think it’s going to be a lot more interest to people than me, just as i said before, walking through a field with a camera taking pictures, um so yeah. I think it’s probably going to give you ideas, creative ideas, but please, let me know in the comments below if you uh would like to see some more of these and, if you’ve liked it um. Please hit that like button. It all helps me um to sort of get where i want to be with this youtube channel so yeah, i think that’s it enough of me waffling on thanks very much for watching um until the next image that i edit. This is john dexter saying bye.
